Working with Martha Rynberg has changed all aspects of my life. To put it bluntly, she saved my life. I signed up for my first SPW class with Martha in 2014. Three years in, just finishing my 10th class, I’m hooked. Martha's got that special gift, unique to only the best of teachers who love to teach and love the work. She’s extraordinarily attentive and supportive. I find most profound Martha's ability to help me go deeper with every show. She’s helped me face inner demons; and find playful, innovative ways to put them on the stage.
Martha is open-minded, insanely sharp and quick-witted, kind, wise and mindful to each performer’s style and approach. She’s extraordinarily playful and creative. Sometimes I go to class just to watch her coach. She’s also exceptional in how she holds space for all perspectives around our identities, genders, social, political, cultural. I not only feel safe with her to explore all subjects, I feel held accountable for the perspective I present on stage. She’s courageous, loving and one of the most unique truth-tellers I’ve every worked with. We are so lucky to have her in the Bay Area! Elizabeth Sale Performer, Writer, Producer, Teacher
Martha Rynberg is a brilliant teacher and director. She has a unique ability to listen deeply, ask a few pointed questions, and transform your understanding of your story. She infuses the development of your work with meaning for you and your audience. As someone who had never done solo or any theater work before, Martha has changed my life through the five shows I've developed in her classes. She works her creative teaching/writing/directorial magic in multiple ways, always reflecting a keen appreciation for the individual, specific perspectives that will find universal connection on stage. Her awareness of issues related to race, gender identity, class, and the LGBTQ community, and her commitment to social justice, also mean that when I work and create with Martha, she helps me enormously with meeting my goal of entertaining to make a difference.
In short, she's wise, conscientious, generous, insightful, and a fantastic artist, teacher, and activist, unmatched in my view. Her classes are always in high demand because there is no one like her. It's why I keep coming back and plan on signing up every chance I get.
